5 Reasons to Relocate Your Business to Glasgow in 2019
21 January 2019
Glasgow is one of the most exciting places in the UK to live and work – and that’s even more true if you’re heading up your own enterprise. Scotland’s largest city is unusual in being a highly affordable place to live and run a business at the same time as well as having an extremely vibrant commercial and cultural life.
When you’re choosing where to move your business, or set up a new one, there are many factors to consider. We’re here to argue that Glasgow comes up trumps across the board. And what better time to start a fresh chapter for your business than at the beginning of a brand-new year?
Businesses in Glasgow Get Value for Money
Average rents in Glasgow are relatively low compared to many other urban hubs in the UK, and a fraction of the cost for similar spaces in Edinburgh or in the southeast of England. That applies to residential properties as well as office and retail spaces, so if you’re relocating your home as well as your business, you may well find you end up saving across all spheres of your life.
While there’s variation between the West End and City Centre, which come with a bit of a premium, and the more affordable (but increasingly trendy) East End, space in historic 19th and early 20th-century buildings and ultra-modern new builds alike is rarely prohibitively expensive here. Take a look at our excellent range of serviced and semi-serviced offices to let in Glasgow to get a sense of the amazing selection that’s out there.
Glasgow is the Shopping Capital of the North
If you run a retail business, this is one of the biggest perks of relocating or branching out to Glasgow. Outside of London, Glasgow has the biggest retail area with the greatest variety of major and local brands anywhere in the UK. People travel to Glasgow city centre to shop from all over Scotland and beyond. Your business could be right at the heart of all that buzzing retail action. Why not see if you can picture yourself in one of our fantastic retail spaces to let in Glasgow?
Glasgow’s Potential is Widely Recognised
It’s not just retailers who recognise what a good thing Glasgow has going on. For years now, Glasgow has led the way in Scotland in terms of the number of new businesses set up. According to statistics published by Companies House, 6,189 brand-new start-ups registered in the city in 2017. That puts Glasgow well ahead of any other city in Scotland as a choice for new businesses.
What does that mean? Well, it means the city is a hotbed of innovation and enterprise, for one thing. Good news when it comes to building mutually beneficial connections. But it also means that the entrepreneurs behind each one of those start-ups saw that Glasgow was the best possible place for their business – and all 6,189 of them can’t be wrong.
Need more convincing? Here’s why Glasgow is better than London (for your business).
Glasgow Businesses Can Access a Lot of Funds
No matter how well your business is already doing – or how much start-up capital you have to be getting on with – a leg-up in the form of some additional funds is not to be sneezed at.
When you establish a business in Glasgow, you’ll be eligible for a great mix of different grants that you can’t access to elsewhere.
First and foremost is the council’s New Business Start-Up Grant, which awards up to £1,000 to new businesses before they open or in their first six months of trading.
Then there’s the West of Scotland Loan Fund, which can help start-up SMEs with funding up to £30,000; and the Glasgow New Business Fund, which offers rental subsidies.
And if you’re moving from outside Scotland, you’ll also for the first time have access to a whole range of Scotland-specific funds, loans and grants. The Glasgow Life website is a good place to get to grips with what’s available.
Glasgow is Talented
If you want your business to be the best, you’ll be looking for the best people to work in it. That’s where Glasgow’s immense pool of talent comes in. Glasgow is home to four universities – the University of Glasgow, the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow Caledonian and Glasgow School of Art – all highly respected across different areas of education. Talented people come from all over the UK to study here – and businesses like yours give them a reason to stay.
