Commercial Property in Glasgow: The Reel House
25 July 2018
We’re excited to announce that The Reel House is now open and available to any business looking to set up shop in some of the most desirable office space in Glasgow. The Reel House is the new name for the old Odeon cinema on Renfield Street and it’s the site of one of Glasgow’s biggest ever renovation projects. This Art Deco building was an iconic part of Glasgow’s considerable architectural legacy and Stelmain is extremely pleased to be managing the property. We’d like to tell you a little bit of the building’s history and about the changes made in the recent renovation.
The History of The Reel House Building
The Art Deco Building was opened in 1934 and it was initially a cinema run by Paramount Cinema. This cinema was one of many in Glasgow; in fact, there were so many cinemas in the city that Glasgow earned the nickname “Cinema City”. The building was later taken over by Odeon Cinemas and referred to as The Odeon until it closed its doors in 2006.
The Odeon’s impressive Art Deco aesthetic grabbed the attention of event planners, and some incredibly high-profile concerts were held there over the years. The Odeon welcomed countless superstar musicians over the years, with Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, and The Beatles all performing there. There was less activity in The Odeon in the 90s and into the 00s; this inactivity precipitated its doors closing in 2006. This refurbishment project presents Glasgow with an opportunity to make the most of the building once more, but in an entirely different way.
The Reel House Renovation Project
After shutting its doors in 2006, The Odeon went through a lengthy renovation project to become the modern office space it is today. It is a Category B listed Art Deco building, so many of its original Art Deco features had to be protected throughout the renovations.
The area around the cinema has also been improved in recent years and this stunning Art Deco building has followed suit. No longer a cinema, The Reel House (as it will now be known) is four floors of modern office space with a balcony and a picturesque roof garden.
The Perfect Office Space: Combining the Old with the New
The Reel House has been rejuvenated with the modern office in mind, so it has all of the amenities and functionalities a modern business could need, such as high-speed internet, secure door entry, air conditioning, etc. However, these modern aspects have been perfectly integrated and blended with the original Art Deco features. This is the perfect combination of old architecture and décor with modern functionality. The overall finish is bright and there is an open feel to much of the office space. The bright white finish on many of the walls modernises them but many of its features still hark back to its 1930s Art Deco heritage.
The windows, the floors, and the walls have all been updated and modernised, giving each floor of the building an open office environment. The Reel House truly lies somewhere between the 1930s Art Deco era and 2018s modern office décor.
The Reel House office space will be managed by Stelmain and let by JLL and Knight Frank. We are very pleased to be managing this building and we’re confident we can maintain the property and ensure it performs to its true potential. We think The Reel House could provide the perfect office space for some of Glasgow’s biggest businesses and we’re excited to see what the city makes of it! The building is an iconic part of Glasgow’s considerable architectural history and we’re extremely pleased it has been brought into the 21st century. If you have any questions about The Reel House or about Stelmain’s range of available Glasgow office space, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
