Glasgow Becomes an Even Better Place for New Businesses
21 November 2018
Previously here at Stelmain, we have discussed why Glasgow is a good place to set up a business, and we’ve looked at a few specific tips and organisations that help entrepreneurs trying to make a success of themselves in Glasgow. We have even more to add to this, however, as a new grant scheme has been founded to promote young entrepreneurs in Glasgow and we’d like to shine a spotlight on it.
New Grant for Glasgow Caledonian University Graduates
This month, we’ve received exciting news that retailTRUST, Hammerson, and Glasgow Caledonian University is stepping up its investment and faith in its graduates by offering £30,000 of grant money to be split up among deserving young entrepreneurs who have studied at the university.
Who Benefits from the Grant Scheme?
As far as we can tell, only people who studied at Glasgow Caledonian University are eligible for the grant. And this makes sense. But Glasgow Caledonia is a big university, with huge roster of alumni. Candidates need to have a well-developed business idea and show that they can make good use of the grant money. This isn’t an indiscriminate handout; it’s a well sourced, intelligent grant scheme aimed at helped those who can really make the most of a start-up grant.
A recent piece on Glasgow Live has gone into detail about one of the grant scheme’s recent beneficiaries. A young graduate of Glasgow Caledonia’s International Fashion Branding course has received £5,000 to help her transform her fashion brand called pplrstrange from an initial concept into a viable business that is making a range of products and can sell fashion items at the Barras Art and Design Centre. This money will also help pplrstrange’s founder, Emma Russell, secure studio space that will allow her to focus on the design process for her business’s products.
More than Just Funding
It’s also important to note that retailTRUST is offering more than just money; they are also providing successful candidates with both training and mentoring. This is incredibly heartening to hear as anyone who has had their own business will understand that it can take a while to learn the ropes and having a mentor at an early stage can make as much of an impact as funding.
How to be Successful in Glasgow if you’re an Entrepreneur
Last month, we published a blog offering 5 tips for entrepreneurs trying to work and be successful in Glasgow. Obviously, we don’t want to repeat everything here, but we’d like to reiterate one point again, as it’s particularly relevant: join Entrepreneurial Scotland. Entrepreneurial Scotland is an organisation designed to function as a hub for Scotland’s entrepreneurs, and it is based in Glasgow. Not only will joining give you access to a network of like-minded people, opening up cooperative opportunities, it will also give you fast access to any brand-new funding and grant opportunities that arise. As an entrepreneur, Glasgow has a lot to offer you, so it’s important to make sure you’re looking and listening out for great opportunities.
