Glasgow Business Named One of the UK’s Best to Work For
14 March 2019
Here at Stelmain, we know better than anyone how important a positive working environment is. Creating spaces that work for you and your staff is what we do, after all. When it comes to your business’s bottom line, as well as the job satisfaction of the people who work for you, it’s well worth going the extra mile to create a physical space that’s pleasant to be in and an office culture that promotes camaraderie and positivity. And not only are existing staff members likely to stay longer at the company and be more productive when they love the space they work in; a stand-out office is a lure for top new talent too.
So, what does it take to turn an office from merely a workplace into a real perk of the job? Well, it’s not easy – from the very start there’s a lot to consider, as our checklist for choosing an office space in Glasgow shows! But to get some idea of where to begin, we can look at one company that’s definitely doing it right.
Itison is a Glasgow-based business that’s just made the Times 100 Best Companies to Work for 2019 list, which is based on direct feedback from employees. With Scottish companies few and far between on the list, and Itison having previously made the cut in 2017, it’s fair to say this company is doing something exceptional. Read on to find out just what that is.
A Beautiful Office Space
Itison hit the jackpot by securing a space that was remarkable even before the business moved in: a sumptuous historic building in Glasgow’s lively, restaurant-filled Merchant City area in the heart of the city. The building’s proximity to excellent transport links makes it easy for stakeholders and employees alike to get to. And once there, they’re in for treat. With its grand Neoclassical façade complete with spectacular stained-glass windows, there’s no need to even step into this building to see how special it is. Once inside, you’ll see that many original architectural features have been preserved – including the beautifully ornate ceiling.
But the Itison office isn’t simply a great place to work because it’s set in an impressive building. Under the leadership of CEO Oli Norman, all kinds of outside-the-box ideas have been implemented to make the workspace really stand out. As well as practical facilities like a mini-creche, fully soundproofed meeting rooms, a kitchen kitted out with a range of free breakfasts items, a yoga space and a shower room, there are lots of fun and unusual features too.
Employees can slide from the upper floor to the lower one using a fireman’s pole – and when they do, they’ll end up right in the bar, where complementary alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available all day. Staff finish up a couple of hours early on a Friday, so they can enjoy some time hanging out at the bar before heading off for the weekend. What better way to round off the week than with some free Prosecco and beer?
One of the most striking features of the space is a huge, colourful hot air balloon suspended in the air over the office floor. The balloon isn’t just decorative (though it does look pretty amazing); it also serves as a motivator for staff, moving up or down depending on the performance of the company. Nearby, a leafy tree covered in tiny sparkling lights offers another way to measure success, with its lights twinkling when new customers sign up.
Rent Your Own Incredible Glasgow Office Space
Itison may have got lucky with its breath-taking Merchant City building, but there’s plenty more where that came from. Glasgow is full of outstanding office spaces in wonderful buildings, all of them just waiting for the right company to fulfil their potential. Whether you need a fully serviced space or you prefer to take control yourself with a semi-serviced space or a traditional letting, your perfect Glasgow office is out there.
